Chairperson's Message

Hello Delegates!
At the outset of the new millennium IIIT-Allahabad initiated an effervescent community of students that are to meet global challenges and it is my pleasure to welcome you to the General Assembly of IIIT- Allahabad Model United Nations 2015.
The United Nations was founded over 60 years ago with the aim of safeguarding civilization from future suffering and degradation. However, regretfully, in the past decades, UN has only partially succeeded in fulfilling its responsibility to ensure that innocent human lives are spared from destruction by proliferation of dangerous weapons into the hands of suspicious and unstable hands. The quest for universal disarmament has reduced to mere affirmations in myriad conventions and protocols. Nuclear proliferation, terrorism and war have especially taken precedence over this vital matter of human dignity.
The UNGA First Committee deals with disarmament, global challenges and threats to peace that affect the international community and seeks out solutions to the challenges in the international security regime. It considers all disarmament and international security matters within the scope of the Charter or relating to the powers and functions of any other organ of the United Nations; the general principles of cooperation in the maintenance of international peace and security, as well as principles governing disarmament and the regulation of armaments; promotion of cooperative arrangements and measures aimed at strengthening stability through lower levels of armaments.

Delegates, it is your responsibility at the upcoming conference to change this deplorable scenario. The topics to be debated are among the most intractable problems facing the world today, problems that are merciless in choice of victim and that persist to wreak havoc on modern society. The background guide provided to all the delegates is designed to give you an insight into these agenda. Please refer to it carefully and exhaustively. Remember, a thorough understanding of a problem is the first step to solving it.
A few aspects that you should keep in mind while preparing:

Mandate
Every committee of the United Nations has a very specific mandate. The discussion of an agenda and proposal of solutions should be within the mandate of the committee.
Procedure
The purpose of putting in the procedures in any committee is to ensure a more organized and efficient debate. Although the executive board shall be fairly strict with the procedure, the discussion of agenda will be our priority. So don‘t restrict your suggestions because of hesitations regarding procedures.
Courtesy
IIIT-A MUN 2015 shall meet only on 17th October, 2015 and there won’t be ample amount of time for all the delegates to give their opinions and deliberate over the agenda. But we would encourage every delegate to please show respect to the fellow delegates. If you have an important point to make, wait till the speaker is finished with his speech and then raise the point.
Foreign Policy
Following the foreign policy of your country is the most important aspect in a Model UN Conference. This is what differentiates a Model UN from any debating format. To violate one‘s foreign policy is the worst mistake a delegate can make.
Research
Many times the delegates think that reading about an agenda and making notes is the most important aspect of research. Research should not be restricted to just your country only.

Role of the Executive Board
The executive board is appointed only to facilitate the debate. Any decision that has to be taken shall be taken by the committee. You are the ones who make the committee and hence be fearless while presenting your opinion on any issue.
One last word of advice is that don‘t run after an award. Try to be a good representative of your country and the best delegate award shall follow you.

With your sublime diplomatic skills, we, the Executive Board members of the United Nation General Assembly of IIIT-A MUN 2015, can take the first step to making this world a better place to live in.

Looking forward to seeing you in action!

Vice-Chairperson's Message

It gives me immense joy to be a part of IIITA MUN 15 for two reason. Firstly it is one of the MUN's in my own home town which gives me another reason to visit and secondly, it's another MUN! It is always a pleasure for all my cognitive abilities and senses to be in an MUN zone. An MUN is not just about an agenda, a committee, a motion raised or a resolutions passed. It is a journey that realizes you that nobody is too small to make a change. It gives every one their own very a small moment of power that defines them.
While sitting on the other side a chair probably has nothing in hands but to be facilitative the debate and diplomacy and to bring the most out of the delegates. Every MUN perhaps witness the seven types of delegates through which one steers to reach a resolution.

The Puppeteer
The Puppeteer, a unique fixture of the crisis committee, is the master (or mistress) of mayhem. Operating almost exclusively in secret directives sent to the chair and crisis staff, these delegates are the most dangerous of them all. The best Puppeteer will be able to control the entire committee without any of their fellow delegates noticing they’ve been strung up.
The Menon
Finally, we have the crème de la crème, and the rarest of breeds, the Aspiring Kissinger. This delegate, while also a so-called “power delegate,” operates in a manner that is entirely distinct from the Ringleader, or even the Puppeteer. The Aspiring V.K.MENON, as the name implies, is diplomatic to the core.
The Vajpayee
The strong and patriotic guy whom everybody respects. He usually is a bilingual. The coffee guy and the girl to accompany. Who is only there to circulate chits asking for coffee dates and murky girl having no idea of what is happening and is just here to be with the guy.
The Orator
While the Ringleader and the Bored Identity can be recognized by their actions (or lack thereof), the Orator can be identified by their words. The Orator is that delegate, in a crisis or a GA, who spends the vast majority of their time writing lengthy, flowery speeches that they then deliver to the committee with unyielding gusto and panache, whenever called upon.
The Bored Identity
The second most noticeable type of delegate in any committee is the Bored Identity, who, while also easy to pinpoint
The Ringleader
Found more often in GAs than in crisis committees, the Ringleader is a fairly common breed. The peacocks of the MUN world, these are the delegates whom you immediately notice upon entering your committee room for the first time.  Often garbed in devastatingly debonair attire, the likes of which you’re fairly certain you saw at one of Gatsby’s parties the night before, these delegates are not only smartly-dressed, but smart to boot.  Most of these delegates will doubtlessly have at least a couple of gavels to their name, and can be very intimidating to have as a fellow delegate.  The Ringleader will seize every opportunity to speak, and is not afraid to commandeer others’ ideas as their own, or to incorporate your ideas into their resolution without your explicit consent or knowledge, if they think it will help them succeed.

However it may sound tedious and difficult but armed with three hallows rather deadly one ; DEBATE , DIPLOMACY and DECORUM one can easily get buy in the MUN universe. One doesn’t have to worry about resolution it is like a thong, it covers certain important issues but leaves some important one too. One just has to stick to the rules and the format and also making it the INDIAN PARLIAMENT.
I believe in MUN's usually it is the journey that miss the most and the end. I guess it is more about that one friend whom you helped charging the laptop or this one girl who help you hold your heels or that one guy who you supported in a motion. It is about you and the memories that you make.

Message for the Security Council (UNSC)

Chairperson (UNSC) - Tanumoy Majumder

Dear delegates,
Welcome! It is my pleasure to welcome you all to the United Nations Security Council at IIIT Allahabad MUN 2015. My name is Tanumoy Majumder and I will be serving you as the President for your council.
Before the start of council, let me make a few pointers clear for all the participants. Laptops and other electronic gadgets would be allowed during the committee to make work easier for you, and to save you from carrying enormous amounts of paper, however the use of internet, need I say it, is strictly forbidden inside council and any infringement of this rule will make you liable to be thrown out of committee.
The proof you need to submit when it comes to the validity of any claim is in this order of priority: UN reports > Reuters reports > Government reports. The facts stated in the Background guide too cannot be used as an answer to a particular question or claim, because a background guide is supposed to guide you, and be the bedrock for your research but should not form the corpus of your research.

The Executive Board will further be looking forward to good debate inside the committee. We advise you to also have fun during the committee and also during the whole fest, which should be a spectacle in itself. An MUN is not just all about winning or losing, it is also about forging long lasting friendships which run long after the committee comes to an end. I encourage you to learn all you can about your agenda first and then study your country’s stand with regard to the selected agenda. Please feel free to contact me if and when you face challenges in your research or otherwise. I look forward to seeing you at the Conference!

All the very best to all of you!
